Egyptian high court lifts ban on Uber, Careem services
Both companies are in talks for merger

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s top administrative court has lifted a ban on the operations of ride-hailing companies Uber and Careem, a judicial source told Reuters on Saturday.

Both companies have faced backlash after 42 taxi drivers filed a lawsuit against them, claiming that the apps’ activities were illegal.

An Egyptian official stated in November that both companies would allocate a 3% additional share of fare received by their drivers to be paid for the Egyptian Tax Authority as income tax on captains.

In July 2018, Uber initiated preliminary talks with its Dubai-based rival to merge their Middle Eastern ride-hailing services.
